For Hannah Keller, the past won't stay dead. Just when she thought she'd buried the memory of the unsolved brutal murders of her parents two years ago, the former Miami cop-turned-writer finds a copy of her first novel. It is full of strange marginal notes, underlined passages, and other cryptic messages. She soon realizes that these scribbled hieroglyphics are not the ravings of a mandman, but a code that, if broken, will lead her to the murderers of her parents.
For Frank Sheffield, the FBI agent who failed to break the case, the only memory is the Kellers' beautiful daughter, who kept calling him day and night, urging him never to give up. But that was years ago, and now Frank's on a task force searching for a psychopathic hit man named Hal Bonner, whose last victim was the daughter of a powerful U.S. senator.
Hannah's and Franks's separate investigations soon put them on a collision course with danger - and each other. Connecting the two is the mysterious J.J. Fielding - an on-the-run financier with millions in embezzled money - who holds the keys to both cases.
